Biography
Blues Blood is Immanuel Wilkins third studio album, heavily inspired by his childhood in Philadelphia. Co-produced by Meshell Ndegeocello, it blends jazz, blues, and gospel, exploring themes of heritage and generational memory. The album begins quietly and meditatively, gradually building momentum. Notably, the track "AFTERLIFE RESIDENCE TIME" addresses the legacy of ancestors and the history of the transatlantic slave trade.
For the first time, Wilkins features vocalists on his album, reflecting various aspects of cultural heritage. The title Blues Blood draws from a quote by Daniel Hamm, symbolizing the complex relationship between pain and joy in the blues. The album also highlights the importance of food and family traditions as a way to preserve cultural memory. Blues Blood offers both a musical and sensory experience, aiming to serve as a healing work, especially for Black people grappling with their history.
