Biography

"Phoenix" is the latest album by alto saxophonist and composer Lakecia Benjamin, produced by the multi-Grammy-award-winning Terri Lyne Carrington. The album boasts a stellar lineup of guests, including Dianne Reeves, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Patrice Rushen, Sonia Sanchez, Angela Davis, and Wayne Shorter. Benjamin uses the metaphor of a phoenix to describe the rebirth of New York City during the pandemic and her personal survival following a serious car accident in Fall 2021. The album serves as a platform for Benjamins compositions and showcases the creativity, talent, and commitment of the female artists she collaborates with. With a band featuring trumpeter Josh Evans, Victor Gould on keys, Orange Rodriguez on synths, drummer Enoch (EJ) Strickland, percussionist Nêgah Santos, and bassist Ivan Taylor, along with guest appearances, "Phoenix" continues Benjamins upward trajectory. Following her acclaimed record "Pursuance: The Coltranes,” the album was released on January 27th, 2023, through Whirlwind Recordings.
